I can attest to having myself regained a significant number of memories from home -- living my life, back in the year I'm from, and remembering nothing about this fleet.

Frankly, it's too complicated to explain the smaller details but there have been other people from my 'world' who have come and gone. What they lack in recollection or that they never knew I was missing...? Yes, it seems that nonsense is true enough.

It's only that all that timeline muck cuts both ways. As troubling as it can be, sometimes it brings windfalls. Faces you never thought you'd see again.

I'd probably be happy to see someone who I'd thought was dead too. Happy enough to not want to leave, even.

It's a very real temptation -- right up until the point where you realize the person you're so happy to see can just as easily be gone, again, the next day. Like I said: no discernible patterns.

Maybe that's something you've come to terms with. But the 'upgrades,' the reward system, the gifts? Getting to see lost loved ones? That'll kill motivation to struggle sure as fear will. It's a reliable tactic.

The first mate. Steve Rogers. I knew him before he gained his -- [ hm, what's a good word? ] -- talents.

Neither. [ well, that's not strictly true. the serum helped. ] He went MIA during a mission and it turns out he got himself frozen in a giant block of ice. Preserved for decades.

...Fair enough. As unlikely as it sounds, it happened. Though I didn't realize he survived until I showed up here.

Perhaps it should have, yes.

But all I felt was relief. He deserved to live -- even if only belatedly.
