But he'll be there, as predicted; he is preparing tea and sitting quite pleasantly and reading with his glasses - a book! From the library, of course. He would rather have paperback. Though this is... hardly good material. Whenever Peggy arrives he'll be sure to say hello by commenting:]
... Oh, dear. It appears the great... Captain Klorford is no match for the wiles of alien Amazonians. I had no clue that six arms could be seductive.
[Also he appears to have a bandage on a hand.
Clearly already facing great perils in the kitchen.
[ although she is as well-heeled (and well-dressed) as is habit, peggy has allowed some routines to slip. for instance, her hair is still damp when she walks into the kitchen. without the opportunity to have been curled, it lays straight against her shoulders.
she walks past him -- leans against the counter -- and is about to say something about the seductive nature of arms when... ]
What the devil happened to you? [ she leans forward and touches his wrist, just shy of the bandages. ]
The devil is absolutely right, if he were a grease fire.
[He casts an exasperated bespectacled glance her way.]
Just a slight burn, nothing to worry about. Though the tale of it is quite something. I had to use a fire extinguisher on my first day working for The Space Bar! Much to Miss Nami's ire.
How eventful. [ dry dry dry. but there's a terse kind of concern to her voice. it edges almost into disappointment. ] Do you still have your job or did that go up in flames, too?
[ -- the kettle is well on its way to boiling, and so peggy deems it necessary to unstash her best tea. she drags a step-stool over to the far end of the cupboard and avails herself of the extra height in order to reach the very very very rear of the topmost shelf. from there she produces a pretty little yellow box of twinnings earl grey.
setting the box in front of jarvis, she invites him to perform his teaish sorcery with the sachets. meanwhile, she takes the opportunity to look him directly in his eyes. ]
Well. [ ever so almost apologetic. ] They're lucky to have you.
He smiles a bit, glancing to the tea and working instead. His sorcery knows no bounds, and he works meticulously as he responds.]
I do hope that is the case. It's all still very new to me, and I admit, I am a creature of routines. However...! I find that in my line of work I've learned to be as flexible as possible.
[A glance up. In other words:]
I'll cope.
And hopefully find alternatives for proper souffles.
[ deep down, she suspects he'll do more than cope. she suspects he'll flourish given half a chance and a can of bisto. given time, she's certain he'll outstrip her. she looks forward to that day. ]
You? Flexible? [ but her disbelief is both affected and affectionate. ] I recall not so long ago you warned me not to call on your services after-hours. So to speak.
I'm afraid I've currently very little to enjoy after-hours aboard the fleet.
[He huffs, good-natured, though there's some level of... melancholy, perhaps, in the expression that passes his features. It's gone as quickly as it came, though. He feels like something important is very much missing in action; it's easy to know just what that something - someone - is. The pangs of being a doting husband, you know.]
Besides! I think you'll find I've adapted very well to your ridiculous schedule of peril and mayhem.
[ with the tea thus recovered from its hiding spot, peggy takes a seat at the table. perhaps it borders on rude to let a guest do all the fussing -- but deep down she'd rather let jarvis calm himself down a bit before she (much more soberly) returns to the subject of tony stark. ]
Peril and mayhem? That's my livelihood you're describing. [ a sly glance suggests she knows it's true. ] Or it was. Will be, once more, after this adventure is done.
I've never been to the Space Bar. Not to eat. What's the menu like?
It's actually quite nice. One of the chefs - a Mr. Salvatore, he's quite skilled.
I imagine I'll learn quite a lot from him.
[Jarvis is by no means wounded at the idea of someone knowing more than him, especially with cooking; it's wonderful to learn new things, and in fact he'd learned quite a bit from the chefs and so on that have been employed over the years. Goodness, he'd learned plenty from his granny as well, the master chef of sorts that she was. She had indulged his enjoyment of baking in the kitchen when his father had been more determined to get him out there in the world with a real and honorable career.
Silly little thoughts from the past, anyway. He tries not to think about it much.]
You'll have to come by there often to see what we've summoned from the oven.
[Just envision Jarvis tapping a magician's wand to the oven and popping out something great, will you.]
Stefan! [ a pleasant pitch of recognition. ] Stefan's lovely, actually. Capital chap.
[ ...but peggy stops herself just short of singing praises of his cooking. as stalwart as she'd certain jarvis's sense of self must be, it can be quite a different beast with a close confident (or -- dare we say it -- friend?) expresses that bit of extra approval for someone else. but stefan's food is indeed delightful -- drawing peggy to those interfaith gatherings just to eat it. ]
Of all the assembled sorts in this Fleet, he is certainly chief among those I'd want to see you introduced to.
[ it isn't that peggy enjoys lying to him. quite the opposite, actually. but she'd given stefan her word that she wouldn't spread 'round his condition. ]
Whatever it is, it might be something he doesn't want other people to know about. [ a bit off-hand, that. she's sowing the seeds of her justification for when it truly is uncovered that she knew all along how inhuman he was. ]
Feels like something agent Peggy Carter would surely investigate, if she were set to work with the man for an indefinite amount of time in the vast reaches of space.

[SURELY YOU KNOW I AM AN UPSTANDING WORKER.]
I'll be working day shifts as a cook there. Something to... occupy my mind, so to speak.

[He rubs his chin, thoughtful. However...]
I don't suppose he's like the - twins you were telling me about?
The powered duo, Wanda and her brother.

No -- no, he's quite ordinary.
[ it isn't that peggy enjoys lying to him. quite the opposite, actually. but she'd given stefan her word that she wouldn't spread 'round his condition. ]
Why do you ask?
action.
Too fast.
Very much blurry and impossible to keep your eye on when he runs, actually.
... Inhumanly so.
[Look Peggy he may be unobservant sometimes, but not all the time!]
action.
You saw as much? [ huff. ] With your own two eyes?

So many times of her catching him unawares, and now it's possibly his day...!]

action.
Well... understood. I'm just glad you're not at all being disingenuous with me.
It would be a shame.

What did he tell you about his sudden superhuman speed? [ maybe if stefan had already explained it for her... ]
action.
I do believe he has quite an aversion to fire as well. He practically threw me the extinguisher himself.
