Your support is appreciated. As is your offered help. Will you be looking to join us in our morning sessions? I know bugger all about your personal qualifications and capability, but I assure you a good run and some challenging calisthenics does most of us a lot of good. Myself included.
I trust whatever put you out of commission is being handled.
[Don't feel bad, Peggy. It took Evelyn a long time to stop sending text messages to people without a STOP at the end of each sentence.]
I would love to join in the morning sessions. My personal qualifications are professionally academic - archaeology, linguistics - but recreationally diverse: I am proficient in small arms training and riflery, hand-to-hand combat, and logistics. I also used to frequently teach at a university back home, and am not unfamiliar with managing rowdy groups.
Fortunately, I've got no lack of volunteer drill instructors.
[ quite a few of them had raised their hands -- peggy can't account for the temperament of each and every one, of course, but she's made certain to give them all genial talking-to over what they might expect. and what she expects, in turn.
as for evelyn's situation! well -- she takes the woman at her word, choosing to pry no more than she already has. that assurance is all she needs. ]
Was such proficiency acquired here or back home? Merely curious.
Family hunting trips; my father served in the rifle brigade near Kabul during the second Anglo-Afghan War and wanted to ensure that his children could handle firearms. I learned self-defencive measures from my husband and older brother.
The majority of my work is located in Egypt and the Arabian peninsula, both of which are not entirely the safest of places.
Here, I have organised the implementation of a complex operation during our last "Wonderland war"-related event.
[ unseen to her partner in this conversation, peggy jots notes at her roll-top desk. shorthand; sparse on all but the basic details. things to keep in mind and experience to consider. but, in the end, evelyn seems best situated to offer that one oft-nebulous treasure: information. ]
What happened? Was it also against the Mirrored side? Was it as short-lived as events typically are?
The Jabberwock was released from the Core after people experienced it in their dreams. It spent a number of days cutting a swathe through the Mirrorside, where Mirrors loyal to the Queen fought it. Mirrors who did not fight or hide crossed to our side, displacing residents and taking their place.
Some Real residents became trapped on the other side, with the Jabberwock. It then advanced to our side. During all this, the Queen avidly sought the location of the Vorpal Sword, and took her time waiting to use it to finally dispatch the creature.
Steve Rogers and I coordinated a defence strategy and emergency protocols to prepare residents, mitigate damages, and organise evacuation procedures into the tunnel system beneath the mansion.
[ this time, she's longer in replying. recording this answer requires keeping more details -- some she'd already known, some she'd never heard before. at least, not told like this.
as ever, it's her prerogative to drive to the heart what's useful. she certainly doesn't so much as reflect, in text, on the inclusion of steve's name. she expects no less from that wonderful infuriating man. ]
Are those protocols still in place? I imagine they were recorded. Perhaps the mansion as a whole could use a refresher. There would have been considerable turnover in four years.
[ she feels scraped by steve's voice -- by his very aspect. peggy plays the announcement twice, once to follow its information and once to follow him. and she's grateful this conversation is being conducted by text alone. she doesn't trust her frown not to betray some sadness.
the broadcast itself not as helpful as she might have wanted it would be, although the verdict is no black mark against evelyn and steve. rather one against her own damnable hope. it trips her up when she least expects; it leaves wide open wounds. for the most part (and understandably) the protocols are so specific to that disaster -- an attack of some big otherworldly beast -- that she's not convinced anything but the broadest strokes will remain relevant if this is, indeed, war.
there is one thing, however: ]
The bit about stocking the tunnels is an excellent idea. Is that still done?
Not since Philip LaFresque left, I believe. He disappeared in the spring of last year.
[A loss that rubs salt over old wounds she thought she had looked after, those she thought had healed. It is strange, remembering someone who used to be a constant.]
The tunnels should still hold the materials he stocked, however.
I wouldn't want to see this dumped in your lap if you have other concerns, Evelyn. But if you had another name you could put forward -- someone who might be well-suited to resuming the scheme -- then I do believe it's an avenue worth pursuing.

I can attach the archived public service announcement for the time being, however.
